Its Where My Feet Are...
Art House Collective
www.MoonDanceArts.ca
And so we begin!
We (3 dancers and a pianist) met last night at the Art House to discuss/begin creation.
We began with dialogue of our theme: We love Canada because "its where [our] feet are". We talked about all the reasons to celebrate being Canadian (freedoms, abundance, health...) and about our shared disgust for our colonial history, that forever taints any sense of patriotism.
We then began to improvise around these ideas and themes, and returned to dialogue to create a structure.
Subject, of course, to evolve and change over the course of the project, our piece will:
- begin with spirit drumming, honouring that this existed before we were here (before "Canada" was here)
- move in to a sense of birthing, of new awareness gained
- celebrate all the beauty and bounty of Canada and being "Canadian"
- revisit the motifs and themes, and return to spirit drum, now incorporated in to the music of the piece
We agreed to solidify at least a small amount of choreography, so as to have a firm jumping off point for the next creation session.
The piece begins on the floor, with the three dancers back-to-back, creating an "egg" shape, a trinity, and feet are the focus of the visual part of the dancers (ie. head is down). We begin moving from this place, emphasising the movement of the feet, our main motif for the piece.
