Spiritual reasons to move to Canada
Paul asked people, “what is the spiritual reason to make art”, on the October 22nd meeting. I have never asked myself this question and I do not have a clear answer yet. But this question made me think of the reason why I moved from my home country and am trying to make Canada, a foreign country, my new home.
My first foreign country to live more than for a year was the US, where I studied art. In my first art class, there were 16 classmates, who were all Caucasian people except an African American woman and me. Also I was the only non-native English speaker. On the first day of the class, I had to create an improvisational collaborative art piece with two other classmates. I was nervous communicating with other proactive Americans as a foreigner and poor English speaker. But at the end of the day I found myself enjoining making art with them. I found there were lots of spaces in art for people from different cultures to mingle. It was a spiritual experience for me.
I wanted to meet with new cultures and people, and make art there. I wanted to see my children and me grow on a new land, as maple seeds propeller and sprout in new places. I chose Canada this time with high hopes and I was not disappointed. My family love our new lives. We all started to feel Canada is our new home.
